About the name Corales de la Tierra
The name is Spanish for Corals of the Earth. The Earth’s coral reefs are one of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems in existence, and in a similar manner, the wonderful individuals we work with are varied and valuable to the richness of each community.
Behind the name Corales de la Tierra lies a story that began long before the organization itself.
Several years ago our founder, Diana Castañeda, found herself at a crossroads. After dedicating much of her life to education, she took time to travel and reflect on what she wanted the next chapter of her professional life to be. During that season, she discovered the extraordinary world of coral reefs. What started as simple curiosity quickly became a passion. Diana immersed herself in books, documentaries and research, learning why coral reefs are among the most important ecosystems on Earth. She discovered how countless marine species depend on them for survival and how rising ocean temperatures, pollution and other environmental pressures are causing a phenomenon known as “coral bleaching,” threatening the delicate balance of life beneath the sea.
Inspired by what she had learned, Diana traveled to Banco Chinchorro, off the coast of Quintana Roo, Mexico, home to one of the world's largest and most biodiverse coral reef systems. After patiently waiting several days for the opportunity to visit the reef, she finally boarded a small boat before sunrise and made the journey out into the open sea. That day changed the way she saw the world. As she swam among the coral formations, she realized she wasn't simply looking at rocks beneath the water. She was witnessing entire living communities—vibrant, diverse, interconnected ecosystems where every organism played a role and every species contributed to the health of the whole.
This experience left a lasting impression. For a time, Diana seriously considered dedicating her life to coral conservation. She wanted to help protect these extraordinary ecosystems and make a difference for the oceans. But she also knew something important. She wasn't a marine biologist or an ocean scientist. Her calling had always been education. That realization led her to ask a simple but life-changing question: “What if I cared for the corals I already know how to protect?”
The answer came almost immediately. Children.
Diana realized that children are every bit as valuable to our world as coral reefs are to our oceans. Each child is wonderfully unique, full of potential and an essential part of the larger ecosystem of humanity. Just as coral reefs flourish when nurtured and protected, children thrive when surrounded by care, understanding and opportunities to grow. At that moment, everything came together. She understood that while she might not be able to restore coral reefs beneath the ocean, she could dedicate her life to caring for the corals here on Earth.
That vision became the inspiration behind the name Corales de la Tierra. Over the years, the meaning of that name has continued to grow. While Diana’s work began by serving children and families, we now recognize that our "corals" include every individual we have the privilege of supporting. Every person brings unique strengths, perspectives and potential, and every person deserves an environment where they can flourish. The name Corales de la Tierra is a daily reminder of our mission: to recognize the extraordinary value in every individual and to help cultivate environments where people can grow, belong and thrive.
Just as coral reefs sustain life beneath the sea, people sustain the future of our world.
