TRANSCRIPT: Meet the Vision Behind Corales de la Tierra: A Nature-Based Approach to Empowering Individuals with Autism

At Corales de la Tierra, every program, every relationship, and every moment is rooted in one powerful belief: every individual deserves to feel valued, supported, and connected.

In the very first episode of the Corales de la Tierra Podcast, founder and CEO Diana Castaneda shared the inspiring story behind the organization, the meaning of its unique name, and the philosophy that continues to shape its mission today.

From Preschool Teacher to Purpose-Driven Founder

Before founding Corales de la Tierra, Diana worked for years as a preschool teacher in the Bay Area. While she loved education, the fast-paced classroom environment eventually led to burnout. Wanting something different, she began dreaming of a nature-based educational program where children could learn and grow outside the traditional classroom setting.

After relocating to Sebastopol in 2018, Diana explored ways to build that vision. During that time, she came across an opportunity to work with individuals on the autism spectrum — an experience that deeply resonated with her background as an educator.

Throughout her years teaching preschool, she had often worked closely with children who struggled with sensory processing, emotional regulation, transitions, focus, and communication. Even before formally studying autism support strategies, she found herself naturally helping these children succeed.

That experience became the foundation for what would eventually grow into Corales de la Tierra.

Why the Name “Corales de la Tierra”?

The name itself carries deep meaning.

During a period of travel and reflection, Diana became fascinated by coral reefs and their importance to the planet. She researched coral ecosystems extensively and visited Banco Chinchorro, one of the world’s largest coral reef systems located in Mexico.

What impacted her most was the realization that coral reefs are among the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on Earth.

That idea sparked a powerful connection:

Human beings are also diverse, unique, and deeply valuable.

From that perspective, the concept of “Corales de la Tierra” — “Corals of the Earth” — was born. The organization’s name reflects the belief that every individual deserves care, inclusion, and an environment where they can thrive.

A Different Approach to Adaptive Skills Training

What makes Corales de la Tierra different from many traditional adaptive skills programs is its client-centered philosophy.

Rather than using a “one-size-fits-all” system, the team focuses on understanding each individual’s interests, strengths, and personal goals. Programs are customized to meet clients where they are emotionally, socially, and developmentally.

This philosophy is heavily influenced by Montessori principles, particularly the idea of following the individual’s natural curiosity and developmental needs.

Nature also plays a central role in the organization’s vision. Diana believes that connection with the outdoors can support emotional regulation, confidence, mindfulness, and overall well-being.

At Corales de la Tierra, growth is not forced — it is nurtured.

Supporting the Coaches Behind the Mission

One of the most unique aspects of Corales de la Tierra is the organization’s commitment not only to clients, but also to its team members.

Diana openly discussed the emotional demands that come with working in the support and education field. Burnout is common in many organizations, especially when staff members feel unsupported or overwhelmed.

That’s why Corales de la Tierra intentionally creates systems that prioritize coach well-being, communication, and emotional support.

The organization holds weekly meetings, team check-ins, collaborative problem-solving sessions, and even fun group activities to help coaches stay connected and encouraged.

By supporting the people who provide care, the organization creates a healthier and more compassionate environment for everyone involved.

The Importance of Self-Care and Presence

During the podcast, Diana also reflected on the importance of self-care and being emotionally present when supporting others.

Inspired by Montessori philosophy, she explained how educators and coaches must learn to “enter with a clean slate” — letting go of stress, distractions, or personal frustrations in order to fully connect with the individual in front of them.

For Diana, self-care includes activities that help her reconnect with the present moment, such as:

  • Roller skating

  • Swimming

  • Long walks

  • Sewing and creative arts

  • Spending time with children and family

These practices help reinforce the same message Corales de la Tierra hopes to share with the community: growth and healing begin when people feel grounded, supported, and understood.

Building Bridges to Independence

At its core, Corales de la Tierra is about building meaningful connections — between individuals, families, educators, nature, and community.

The organization continues to empower individuals with developmental disabilities by creating personalized programs that encourage independence, confidence, inclusion, and personal growth.

As Diana shared during the episode:

“Every small step leads to big changes.”

And that mission continues to guide every part of Corales de la Tierra’s work.
